UfM :
'more women in politics and heads of institutions'
Document
approved by Plenary calls for reforms and new laws
More women should be in
politics and heads of institutions and this should be achieved by via
constitutional reforms, new laws and in particular gender quotas : these are
the three key demands approved by the last plenary Assembly of the Union for
the Mediterranean (UfM).
The report by the Committee
on Womens Rights in euro-Mediterranean countries, ''urges UfM Member States to
introduce constitutional reforms that consolidate full equality between men and
women'', with a strong focus on women in politics.
This means reviewing
electoral and union laws, and above all ''implementing gender quotas and other
forms of positive action in politics that will incur financial sanctions in
case of non-compliance - sanctions that have proved very effective in political
gender reform''.
The UfM is also calling for
''the adoption of a co-presidency system between men and women in national and
local institutions in Euro-Mediterranean countries, to increase the visibility
of women and their capacity for leadership in politics''. The rather unique
idea is likely to spark debate across UfM countries.
