The 43-member Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) approved an economic affairs commission resolution calling for the creation of a Euro-Mediterranean lender and for more visas to be given to the region's citizens.
The resolution calls for the creation of ''a region-specific financial instrument capable of fulfilling the needs of Mediterranean countries in a more coordinated and timely way, and of contributing to the ongoing process of transformation and democratization''.
The new bank should be modeled after the Facility for Euro-Mediterranean Investment and Partnership (FEMIP), an arm of the European Investment Bank (EIB).
Granting more people visas is key to promoting true cooperation and actual exchanges between the two shores of the Mediterranean, the resolution also said.
Those in need of visas include ''entrepreneurs, students, professors, experts, tourists, researchers, artists and other citizens, as well as those holding service and diplomatic passports''.
The idea is ''to reduce the enormous gaps that currently affect social, economic, and cultural mobility and exchange in the Mediterranean region''.
The UfM parliamentary assembly also called for ''boosting collaboration and information exchange between relevant national authorities to facilitate the granting of visas'', albeit with an eye for security.
